Vonnegut is one of my heroes. Whenever I need to be inspired or reminded what it is a writer does, I turn to him (along with Serling, Steinbeck, and Bradbury. There are others, but let's not wander).
I think this's good advice to those of us who write.
Random personal side notes:
When I'm cooking up a character, the first thing I ask myself is "what do they love?" ... everything they do will revolve around that. It's true for all of us.
Also: if anyone else could have written it, tear it up. Sure, there're a finite number of plots and all that, but do something different with it. Put a spin on it. Stand out. Make it memorable.
And last: there's no such thing as too much bacon.
